Errordoctor2009: Different Name, Same Game
When it seems as if a new computing threat is popping up everyday, we can take at least a small measure of relief from the knowledge that most of these programs are just the same scam with a different name, making them far easier to deal with. Such is the case with errordoctor2009, a rogue antispyware program with a dozen different names, but thankfully, all playing the same game.
Here’s the game: Programs like errordoctor2009 will sneak onto your computer either by means of a Trojan already on your system that has opened a security hole, by visiting an infected website, or by trying to download video codec that is malware in disguise. Once on your system, errordoctor2009 will start to harass you with very threatening pop ups claiming that it has found any number of malicious threats on your computer, including registry errors that are seriously inhibiting your PC’s performance. It claims that the only way to fix your computer’s badly damaged state is to purchase the full version of errordoctor2009 so that it can remove the problems and optimize your system’s performance. Meanwhile, errordoctor2009 is itself inhibiting your computer’s performance so as to really convince you that there is something wrong, all the while making more and more threatening “warnings” that your computer is going to crash soon if you don’t buy the full program.
Of course, all of these warnings are fake, and buying the full program only leaves you out money with a computer still infected, and your credit card information in the hands of potential identity thieves. Sounds like a fun game, doesn’t it?
If you have found yourself in this situation, and have not yet fallen for the scam, you should take steps to remove errordoctor2009 immediately. If you have already fallen for the scam, you should still remove errordoctor2009 immediately, but you should also consider monitoring your credit report and changing passwords to any sensitive personal information residing on your machine.
You can remove errordoctor2009 manually by killing its running processes, deleting its registry entries and associated files, and unregistering its DLLs. If you are less than absolutely positive you know how to do this, it may be a wiser choice to invest in a legitimate antispyware tool to do the job for you. Accidentally deleting the wrong file could cause irreparable damage to your computer, and if you miss any of errordoctor2009’s files it will simply reinstall itself upon reboot.
Should you choose to go the automated route, choose wisely. As we’ve seen, there are a ton of programs out there that claim helpfulness when in reality they are nothing of the sort. Look for an antispyware tool that guarantees 100%
